Conservatives in Clifton & Pendlebury have selected local campaigner Jillian Collinson as their candidate for the upcoming Pendlebury ward by-election, which following the sad death of Cllr Maureen Lea will be held on 19th March.
Jillian has lived in the local area for over 20 years. She is particularly interested in health and education issues and is a governor at Springwood Special School in Swinton and also at Oakwood School. She is a relationship and bereavement counsellor who is involved with the Primary Care Trust work on palliative care for children.
Commenting on her selection, Jillian said: “It is an honour to be selected as the Conservative candidate for Clifton and Pendlebury. I am passionate about ensuring that Clifton and Pendlebury are safe, secure and happy places to live, grow up and work”.
At the last election, there were only 149 votes between Labour and the Conservatives in Clifton and Pendlebury. The LibDems were in a poor third place - a vote for them just helps Labour get back in. Labour have taken the local area for granted - only Jillian Collinson and the Conservatives can beat Labour in Pendlebury ward!

Local residents in Salford will face another year of rising bills after Salford’s Labour Council pushed through yet another increase in Council Tax. Salford’s Council Tax has now risen by a shocking 86% since 1997.
Conservatives proposed a freeze on Council Tax but this was rejected by Labour Councillors and not supported by the Liberal Democrats.
Conservatives recognise that in the current economic climate many local residents are struggling with their bills, and believe that the Council should do everything it can to reduce the burden on hard-working taxpayers across the City. A Conservative-run Council would:
- Freeze Council Tax
- Scrap unnecessary Council expenditure, such as Labour’s glossy propaganda magazines.
- Freeze Councillor allowances and slash the number of “special allowances” for Councillors
- Reduce use of expensive outside consultants
- Prioritise spending in areas of real need
Following the publication of the latest unemployment figures this week, local figures released by the Conservatives show that the number Salford residents claiming unemployment benefit has risen by 55% over the past 12 months.
Commenting on these figures, Cllr Iain Lindley, Prospective Conservative MP for Worsley & Eccles South, said:
“We can all see the effect of the recession on the high street, but these figures are a stark reminder of how hard local families in Salford are being hit.
Many local residents are struggling to pay their bills, which is why the Conservatives have announced a series of tax breaks for families, including a national freeze on Council Tax and the removal of stamp duty from 9 out of 10 first time buyers.
Local businesses in Salford would also benefit from a proper National Loan Guarantee Scheme, which will make a huge difference to the flow of credit, helping to protect jobs and prevent further rises in unemployment.”
