A Worrying Attack On Democracy

Hard-pressed local taxpayers like you and I face the prospect of the systematic dismantling of rules introduced in the 1980s to monitor wasteful Councils and “jobs for the boys”. We are also facing having the bankroll free doughnuts to bribe residents into voting, and allowing Councillors to avoid turning up to meetings and vote “remotely” instead.

The proposals were outlined by Salford Labour MP Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities, in a so-called “community empowerment” White Paper called “Communities In Control”. It sounds as if it is going to be a good thing, but the small print reveals that Labour Ministers will bring back “jobs for the boys” and are pledged to tear up the rules introduced in 1989 to stop corruption in Local Government.
