Hope Maternity Unit Scores Top Marks

Salford Conservatives have congratulated hard-working staff in the maternity and neo-natal unit at Salford Royal (Hope) Hospital after they were ranked in the top ten maternity units in the country. Well done!

Unfortunately the Labour Government, which includes Salford MP Hazel Blears, is still committed to closing down the Hope Maternity unit. Local Conservatives continue to campaign against this decision and believe that the much-needed and high-performing maternity services should remain located in Salford.

Labour’s Monton Parking Charges Slammed

Local Conservative campaigners Councillor Ann Davies and Judith Tope have slammed shocking new proposals put forward by Salford’s Labour Council to introduce parking charges for residents and shoppers in Monton Village.

The introduction of parking charges in Monton is being proposed as Labour try to plug a £12 million hole in next year’s budget.

Councillor Ann Davies, who represents Eccles ward which includes Monton, said:

“I’m appalled by the prospect of car parking charges in Monton Village. It will have a catastrophic effect on local businesses and will cause gridlock on residential streets where it is often already very difficult for local residents to park.”

“Local residents and shopkeepers will be disgusted – the Council have let them down badly. I have launched a petition so that local residents can show the strength of feeling on this issue which I hope will be available in local shops to sign.”

Blears Has Let Salford Down

Local Conservatives in Salford have today reminded local residents of the failure of Hazel Blears to stand up for the City, after the Salford MP won the Labour nomination for the new Salford & Eccles seat.

Councillor Robin Garrido, Chairman of Salford Conservatives said:

“The Labour Party has selected Hazel Blears despite her complete failure to stand up for Salford residents in Parliament. The Labour Government – of which she is a prominent member – are closing the maternity and neo-natal unit at Salford Royal (Hope) Hospital and as Minister for Local Government she has personally overseen the worst grant settlement to Salford City Council in decades, as well as the removal of Salford’s share of the new business rates. Labour are not listening to local residents – it’s time for a change”

Labour Are Ripping The Heart Out Of The City

Leader comment by Conservative Group Leader Cllr Karen Garrido - originally published by the Salford Advertiser.

As I sit down to write my first article of the New Year I recall watching with unbelievable sorrow the killing of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan and the mass killings in Kenya, all because of one election and the result of another. I think how fortunate we are that we live in a true democracy and are able to express our opinions freely. As politicians we must always remember how fragile democracy can be and how brave people are who stand up for democracy around the world.

Last week David Cameron visited Salford and gave a keynote speech in the Civic Centre on crime. He spoke about the need to end the culture of violence and “reclaim the streets”. Citing James Brokenshire’s review of Labour’s RESPECT action plan, David attacked the Government for abandoning their “respect agenda” and allowing gun crime and anti-social behaviour to increase. He argued that both Government and society have roles to play in reclaiming the streets:

  • The Government in making people responsible for their own actions with punishment and deterrents, getting police officers back on the streets
  • Society in helping to stop crime by reporting offenders and helping to steer others away from crime

Shadow Transport Secretary Visits Salford

Salford Conservatives were delighted to welcome the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport Theresa Villiers MP to Salford on Monday 14th January.

The Shadow Minister took in a Metrolink journey from Salford Quays to Eccles, met with ward Councillors Beryl Howard and Robin Garrido along with local residents in Boothstown to discuss bus services, and visited Walkden railway station with Councillors Iain Lindley and Les Turner to discuss train overcrowding at peak periods.

Salford Conservatives are grateful to Theresa Villiers for taking the time to discuss the issues that affect rail and bus users across Salford and look forward to seeing future Conservative policy proposals that will help improve public transport in Salford and across Greater Manchester.
