Salford Conservative Councillors have demanded urgent action after an OFSTED report condemned Salford Council’s safeguarding procedures as “inadequate”.
The annual OFSTED performance assessment gave the Council the worst possible rating in the “staying safe” section, but there were problems elsewhere. Most services were rated only as “adequate”, with only a handful being deemed “good” and no services achieving the highest ranking of “outstanding”.
Walkden South Councillor Iain Lindley condemned the lack of opportunity to scrutinise the Council’s procedures after the report was published. He said:
“It is very disappointing that the Children’s Services Scrutiny Committee were due to have a meeting on December 12th, and it has been cancelled due to a ‘lack of substantial issues for consideration’. This report raises some pretty urgent issues about some of our most vulnerable young people and I am disappointed we’ve not taken the opportunity to scrutinise our safeguarding procedures which we could have done at the meeting.”
Councillor Christine Gray, Conservative spokesman on Children’s Services, said:
“Children in Salford have been badly let down by the Labour council - some who are on the child protection register don’t even have a qualified social worker.
“On the other hand Conservative councillors would improve the status of social workers because Conservatives believe children deserve the best.”
